Webster Geneva Hosting International Humanitarian and Security Conference
November 06, 2024
The International Relations Program at Webster Geneva is excited to host the 29th Annual International Humanitarian and Security Conference (IHSC) on Nov. 21 at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG), 17 Rue de Varembé in Geneva.
This year’s conference, themed “The Resurgence of Conflicts: Challenges to Existing Security, Humanitarian and Human Rights Frameworks,” will dive into some of the most pressing security and humanitarian challenges of our time.
Recent events, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, have sparked a re-examination of international security policies and humanitarian practices. This year's conference comes as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, established to protect civilians and war victims. In today’s world, however, the frameworks designed to uphold peace, security and human rights face unprecedented tests.
Conference Focus
The conference will assess recent developments, such as:
- Reevaluated Defense Policies: The West and East Asia have adjusted their defense strategies in response to perceived threats, such as those from China, North Korea and other state and non-state actors.
- Impact on Humanitarian Law: Ongoing hostilities, like the Israel-Gaza conflict, continue to challenge the enforcement of international humanitarian and human rights laws.
Panels and Keynote Highlights
This year’s IHSC will feature keynote speeches and four panels addressing critical issues:
- The Russia-Ukraine War: Will European nations step up their defense?
- Arms Trade in Conflict Zones: Examining the consequences of arms trafficking in the Global South and beyond.
- International Justice for Atrocities: A look at the effectiveness of prosecuting genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
- The Geneva Conventions’ Legacy: Reflecting on 75 years of the Geneva Conventions and their relevance in modern conflicts.
Keynote speakers include:
Collaboration and Participation
As with previous conferences, the 29th IHSC is organized in cooperation with prominent international and non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and the Webster Humanitarian Association (WHA). This collaborative spirit ensures that the IHSC remains a pivotal event for experts and advocates in international relations, humanitarian aid and peace building.
