Study Trip to CERN
On 4 October students enrolled in the Leadership and Ethics class taught by Professor
Maryvelma S. O’Neil and Professor Michael D. O’Neil enjoyed a special guided tour
of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. They gained a first-hand
view of the extraordinary mission and scope of CERN, where 5,000 physicists and engineers
are hard at work, using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments
to probe the basic constituents of matter – its fundamental particles. Students were
impressed by the engagement of scientists who analyze data from some of the laboratory’s
projects 24/7 at the CERN Control Center. During the second part of the tour Dr. Brian
Martin Hon. Sc.D., a veteran engineer at CERN, gave students an insider’s look at
leadership and management of such a complex, international organization.
