Reading the Label: Gifted, Talented, and Creative

On the 3rd of October, Connie Phelps, EdD, Emporia State University, USA, gave a public talk as part of the Creativity and Innovation Lecture Series organized by the Webster Center of Creativity and Innovation (WCCI). Her talk, titled “Reading the Label: Gifted, Talented, and Creative” explored the notion of giftedness in relation to related phenomena such as talent and creativity. In particular, she focused on what we know about gifted individuals and what the most common myths and misconceptions are when it comes to identifying or teaching them. Special attention was given to the sphere of education and the kind of challenges and opportunities different educational choices (such as acceleration and enrichment) can have on the development and well-being of gifted individuals. In the end, sociocultural questions emerged around the role of other people and social interactions in helping gifted people fulfil their potential.
