Visa Application Process

For Non-EU Students

Important

For the most up-to-date information or for answers to detailed questions, please contact the Swiss Embassy or Swiss Consulate nearest to you, or refer to the Swiss Department of Foreign Affairs website and select your country of residence.

Please remember that all students from outside the European Union and EFTA member states must request a Swiss Student Visa from the Swiss Embassy or Swiss Consulate in your home country (or country of legal residence) before entering Switzerland. Tourist and/or Schengen Visas are not accepted for study purposes, and Webster Geneva Campus will not allow students to register for courses under a Tourist and/or a Schengen Visa.

Note: While every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided in this section is correct and precise, Webster Geneva Campus cannot guarantee that it is complete, accurate or up to date. The information in this section is not intended to give legal advice, however it is given to you as a tool for understanding and hopefully, it will help you prepare for the application processes for a Swiss Student Visa.

Note: it can take between 6-12 weeks from the time you submit your application until the Swiss Embassy or Swiss Consulate notifies you of the Canton of Geneva’s decision. For certain countries where the applicant’s file also needs to be reviewed by the Federal Swiss level, it can take more than 3 months.

You need to submit your application forms and supporting documents to the Swiss Embassy or Swiss Consulate nearest you. Once all your documents have been submitted the Swiss Embassy or Consulate will forward your application to the Office de la Population et des Migrations (Immigration Office) in the Canton (State) of Geneva. Geneva will assess your application, sometimes in consultation with the Federal authorities in Bern. They will notify the Swiss Embassy or Consulate of their decision internally. Finally, the Swiss Embassy or Consulate through which you submitted all your documents will then notify you.

When the Swiss Embassy or Consulate notifies you that the visa has been approved, they will ask you to bring or send your passport. Bringing or sending your passport will depend on how far you live from the Swiss Embassy or Consulate. The Swiss Embassy or Swiss Consulate will then place a visa in your passport, which is valid for a specific period of time. Within this visa period you must arrive in Switzerland, register for classes and present yourself at the Geneva Office de la Population with the documents that we will provide you with at New Student Orientation.

The student visa process is lengthy and requires you to pay close attention to all the details. Follow instructions carefully and provide all requested documents. Visa applications will sit untouched if incomplete and the authorities may not contact you. It is important to keep personal copies of all forms and documents submitted to the Swiss authorities.

Swiss Visa Requirements Application Form

If for any reason your file is not ready before your anticipated flight to Geneva for orientation, please reach us in the final week so we can coordinate your options for either a late arrival or deferral to the subsequent term.

Please find the Swiss Embassy or Swiss Consulate nearest you. Once you have selected your country of residence on that website, please click on “Visa section: Visa information or Entering Switzerland." On the right-hand side of the "Visa Information or Entering Switzerland" page, you will find all the necessary documents and forms to download to apply for a Swiss Student Visa.

Important Note

Geneva’s authorities at the Office Cantonal de la Population et de la Migration (OCPM) require up to three months to process an entry visa from the date of your application.

If you submit your application less than three months before the start of your desired intake, there is a risk that your visa may not be processed in time. This could delay your academic plans.

For more details, please contact the Admissions Office.

Ensure you complete and submit your Housing Application.

Webster Geneva offers a variety of housing options for students on and off campus. Freshman students are primarily housed on-campus in Bellevue in our Living and Learning Center (LLC).

Returning undergraduate students, study abroad and graduate students have additional options for off-campus housing.

Business Office Payment Procedures

Students have one account with the University to which all their tuition, housing and other fees are charged. All tuition and fees are paid in Swiss Francs (CHF). Tuition should be paid before the beginning of each semester. The latest tuition will be accepted is Friday at the end of the first week of the term. Housing should be paid for before the start of each semester. Please visit housing for details concerning rental charges.

An undergraduate student is defined as full-time if registered for 12-18 credit hours at any time for a semester. The University has two 16-week semesters per year. The Fall semester includes the Fall 1 and Fall 2 terms, each of which is 8-weeks long. The Spring semester includes the Spring 1 and Spring 2 terms, each of which is 8-weeks long.

All full-time students are subject to a flat fee, even if they withdraw to fewer than 12 credit hours. For the 2024-2025 year, the cost of a semester’s tuition for a full-time student is CHF 17,500. Additional fees such as lab fees and study trip fees are not included in flat fee and will be billed separately.

Note: Any additional credit hours in excess of 18 credits will be billed at a rate of CHF 1,100 per credit hour.

Note: The University also offers one 8-week Summer term. Students registered for courses in the Summer term are billed per credit hour. For the 2024-2025 year, each course is billed at CHF 3,300.

Tuition for graduate students is billed per course every term. Graduate students are defined as full-time if registered for two courses in each of the terms (Fall 1 and Fall 2 terms, Spring 1 and Spring 2 terms and the Summer term). For the 2024-2025 year, each course is billed at CHF 3,300.

The cost of textbooks is included in the tuition price. This policy does not cover the cost of textbooks for online courses. Please note that exceptional costs such as lab fees or field trip expenses are not included in the tuition fee and will be billed separately.

Note: Tuition and fees are subject to change every Summer term.

It is the University’s policy that students are responsible for their bills. This responsibility includes reviewing the bill upon receiving it and ensuring that payments are made by the due date. Students who do not pay their own bills must make sure that their parents or others who have agreed to pay have access to the bill.

Tuition and other fees must be paid in full in order for students to register for each new term. Registration may be denied to those students whose bills are not fully paid by the established deadlines. No diplomas or transcripts may be released until all debts to the University are paid in full.

Organizations, individuals and third-party sponsors paying for a student’s educational expenses at Webster Geneva Campus are requested to submit a statement of financial responsibility. The Business Office will send invoices directly to sponsors.

The University offers a payment plan to eligible students to pay tuition and fees in installments as agreed with the Senior Accountant at the  Business Office. Any outstanding balances from the previous term must be paid in full by the due date agreed. Students who are negligent in making their payments as agreed may not be permitted to use the plan in subsequent terms.
